We present a success story in the use of probes in avocado cultivation because optimizing irrigation is fundamental, given the water needs of this tree.
Use of probes in avocado cultivation
We are at an avocado farm in Valencia. We analyzed the amount of water used before and after the installation of the soil sensors. Our goal is to use the least amount of resources to maintain correct water levels in the soil. Therefore, in this image, we can see how we achieved this goal by reducing water usage from 573 liters per irrigation to 316 liters per irrigation. This represents a 45% savings, without any loss of quality in the avocado crop.

Keys to Optimizing Irrigation with Probes in Avocado Cultivation
Irrigation controlled by root moisture and temperature sensors improves water use efficiency in avocado cultivation and optimizes tree growth. These probes allow for real-time monitoring of soil conditions and the tree’s water needs, helping to irrigate only when necessary and in the right amount.
Benefits of Installing Sensors/Probes
- Water Savings: The sensors detect soil moisture levels, preventing unnecessary irrigation and adjusting water use according to actual conditions.
- Improved Avocado Development: Precise irrigation control promotes healthier growth by preventing both water stress from lack of water and problems caused by excess.
- Time and Resource Efficiency: It automates the irrigation process, reducing the need for manual intervention and optimizing the use of fertilizers and other inputs.
- Disease prevention: Proper moisture control in the root zone reduces the risk of diseases such as root rot, common in poorly drained or waterlogged soils.
Plantae probes used in avocado cultivation:
- Soil moisture: Measures the amount of water available in the soil. Avocados require well-controlled irrigation. They are very sensitive to excess water, which can cause root asphyxiation, but also suffer from water scarcity.
- Soil temperature: Indicates the health of the root system. Excessive moisture helps prevent fungal growth.
- Conductivity: Measures the accumulation of salts in the soil. Excess salts can form a layer through evaporation, hindering soil oxygenation.
- Weather station: Measures climatic factors such as temperature, air humidity, and solar radiation, which also affect the trees’ water requirements.
- Flow meter: Monitors water flow to ensure the irrigation system is functioning correctly and to prevent waste. Sensors installed in the soil send real-time information, visible on a mobile phone or tablet.
Based on the data received, the system determines when and how much to water.
If the moisture level falls below the desired threshold, irrigation can be activated.
