The goal this time is to optimize irrigation using probes in football fields, and to do this, we analyzed the turf moisture readings.
Optimizing Irrigation with probes in football fields
This field typically used weekly backup irrigation, and the rest of the time, sprinkler irrigation. After analyzing the sensor data, they switched to monthly backup irrigation, achieving the same objectives but with only a quarter of the backup water. The savings have been significant.

The Importance of Using Soil Moisture Sensors for Sports Fields
We Install Soil Moisture Sensors
- These sensors are placed in different areas of the field to measure moisture levels in real time. They are wireless and can be installed above or below ground. If not installed above ground, they are removed before any competition.
- They allow us to know the exact amount of water in the soil and whether or not irrigation is necessary. Proper irrigation prevents water stress or over-irrigation, resulting in a greener and more resilient lawn.
- We also measure the depth at which the soil is moist, helping to determine the correct amount of water to apply to reach the turf roots.
Weather Station
- The station collects data on weather conditions, such as temperature, wind speed, relative humidity, solar radiation, and rainfall.
- This data helps adjust irrigation based on weather forecasts. For example, if rain is expected, watering can be delayed or reduced.
Soil Temperature Sensors
- These sensors measure the temperature of the root system, preventing the growth of fungi that can harm the lawn.
The data from the sensors and the irrigation system is monitored in real time with our Plantae digital platform, allowing adjustments to be made on the fly based on the conditions of the sports field.
