Agrarian Census 2020 for the agricultural sector

The Agrarian Census 2020 is carried out by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) every 10 years, and collects information on the structure of the agricultural sector in our country.

European Regulations 2018/1091 and 2018/1874 establish the obligation to carry out an Agricultural Census in 2020 and specify a series of variables to be collected.

Structural data from the census

  • Farm size.
  • Land tenure and use.
  • Cultivated areas.
  • Irrigation.
  • Livestock population and labor, among others.

What is the census?

  • These are basic data for analyzing the trends in agricultural information in the different countries of the Union and for making decisions about the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
  • The information from the Agrarian Census is useful for political decisions, the design of statistical operations in the agricultural field, and the preparation of economic accounts for agriculture. 

Information collected by the INE

  • Responsabilidad jurídica y económica de la explotación.
    • Es la persona física que gestiona la explotación.
    • Puede hacer la gestión del censo o delegar en otro miembro familiar conviviente o un trabajador de la explotación.
    • Si hay más de un jefe de la explotación se debe elegir uno para hacer el censo.
  • Data of the Head of the farm.
  • Variety / Species / Type / Subtype of the crop.
  • Ecological production.
  • Certification of organic production.
  • Cultivation system.
  • Destination of production.

Complementary census block (Annex IV of the Regulation)

  • Se detallan:
    • Datos del titular.
    • Localización geográfica.
    • jefe de la explotación.
    • Régimen de tenencia de la Superficie Agrícola Utilizada (SAU)
      • (SAU) Unidad desde el punto de vista técnico que realiza labores agrícolas dentro del territorio nacional con actividad principal o secundaria.
    • Variables relativas a la tierra:
      • SAU libre.
      • SAU en invernadero
      • Superficies por cultivos, otras tierras, regables o ecológicas.
    • Variables relativas al ganado.
  • Module related to labor and rural development.
  • Module on stabling and manure management.
  • Casos especiales:
    • Explotaciones ganaderas de reproducción e investigación.
    • Empresas industriales.

Farms are not considered

  • Kennels.
  • Animal shops and slaughterhouses.
  • Cattle companies that are not engaged in breeding.
  • Zoological parks and animal farms for fur, ornamental birds.
  • Parceled and urbanized land.
  • Agricultural service companies.

Agricultural census date 2020

From February 2020 to October 2020 and the data is published in March 2022.

Territorial scope

The obligation extends to the entire Peninsula, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla.

Population scope

Farms to be considered in the 2020 agricultural census:

  • 5ha SAU at least.
  • 2ha arable at least.
  • 0.5 ha UAA of potatoes at least.
  • 0.5 ha of UAA of strawberries and fresh vegetables at least.
  • 0.5ha of UAA of medicinal and aromatic plants, flowers, seeds, nurseries…. at least.
  • All UAA of at least 0.3 ha of fruit, berry, citrus trees excluding nurseries and vineyards.
  • 0.1ha of vineyards at least.
  • 0.3 ha of olive trees at least.
  • 100m 2 of greenhouses at least.
  • 1.7 livestock units at least.
